Inter Miami Reportedly Hires Kily Gonzalez as Head Coach

Inter Miami have hired former Argentina international Cristian “Kily” Gonzalez as their new head coach, according to a Guardian report citing two sources familiar with the negotiations. The report said Cesar Luis Merlo was first to disclose the move. The appointment would replace interim manager Guillermo Hoyos, although the club’s reported decision was attributed to unnamed sources rather than an announcement quoted in the report.

Hoyos took charge after Javier Mascherano resigned for personal reasons on April 14. Mascherano’s exit came several weeks after Inter Miami were eliminated by Nashville SC on aggregate in the last 16 of the Concacaf Champions Cup. Hoyos had previously worked as an assistant and as head of methodology in the club’s academy.

MLS announced Thursday that Hoyos had received a one-game suspension over Inter Miami’s repeated violations of the league’s late-kickoff policy. The Guardian reported that it remained unclear whether Hoyos would stay with the organization in another role after his interim tenure.

The coaching change comes during a difficult run. Inter Miami have won three of nine games since returning from the MLS World Cup break, with their latest victory coming against Atletico San Luis in the Leagues Cup on August 5. A 3-2 loss to Leon eliminated them from that tournament on August 12, and a 4-1 league defeat by Nashville followed. The team has gone five matches without a win.

Gonzalez previously managed Rosario Central from 2020 to 2022, Union from 2023 to 2025 and Platense for 14 games last year. The Guardian placed his career managerial win rate at 32.5%. As a player, he made 56 appearances for Argentina, with his final two caps coming in 2005 World Cup qualifiers that also featured Lionel Messi.

Inter Miami currently trail Nashville by 10 points in the Eastern Conference and sit third in the Supporters’ Shield standings behind Nashville and the Vancouver Whitecaps. The defending MLS Cup champions had entered the season among the favorites after adding Sergio Reguilon, Dayne St Clair, German Berterame and Casemiro.
