Inglis century and late Bavuma wicket put Australia ahead in Cape Town decider
Australia finished the third day of the deciding Test in Cape Town with South Africa 140-4 in their second innings, only 40 runs ahead. Josh Inglis' century helped the tourists establish a first-innings advantage before Nathan Lyon dismissed Temba Bavuma late in the day, according to reports from BBC Sport and the Guardian.
Watch the highlights:
Australia were bowled out for 429 in reply to South Africa's 329, leaving the hosts needing 100 simply to draw level. Inglis scored 102, his second Test hundred, and Alex Carey contributed 80. Simon Harmer removed both batters and finished with 4-104, helping South Africa limit the damage after Australia's substantial middle-order contributions.
The second innings began badly for South Africa's top order. Aiden Markram made one before driving Mitchell Starc to Travis Head at mid-off. David Bedingham then fell for 11, caught by Lyon off Josh Hazlewood after attempting a pull. His dismissal left the hosts 31-2, still well short of wiping out Australia's lead.
Marques Ackerman provided resistance with 62, sharing a 64-run partnership with Bavuma before Starc struck again. The Guardian's live report described a short delivery that took an edge and deflected off Ackerman's helmet before Cameron Green completed the catch. South Africa were 95-3, five runs behind, with another established batter gone.
Bavuma continued to resist alongside Matthew Breetzke, facing 115 balls for his 35 and hitting just one boundary. BBC Sport reported that Australia captain Pat Cummins added a silly point shortly before the decisive dismissal. Bavuma then attempted an attacking stroke against Lyon, missed, and was bowled with only minutes remaining in the day's play.
Breetzke reached stumps unbeaten on 19, with Ryan Rickelton on eight, according to the Guardian. Their partnership will resume with six wickets remaining and South Africa still needing to build a defensible target. Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen were among the batters yet to come, while the turn Lyon extracted offered evidence that a later Australian chase could still prove difficult. The match and series remained undecided at the close.
