Ingebrigtsen wins Ultimate Championships 5,000m in 12:59.24

Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men's 5,000m at the inaugural Ultimate Championships in Budapest on Friday, finishing in 12 minutes 59.24 seconds to collect the $150,000 first prize. According to The Guardian's reporting from the meeting, the Norwegian finished nearly a second ahead of reigning world champion Cole Hocker after accelerating away on the final lap.

The Olympic champion covered that last lap in 54.39 seconds and the closing 100 metres in 12.6 seconds. He had looked around twice during the final circuit before making his decisive move. The victory followed a public disagreement between the two runners over pacing arrangements at the recent Diamond League 1,500m final, but it was their racing that settled this encounter.

Ingebrigtsen's result came after an Achilles injury that had left him uncertain whether he could compete again at this level. In comments reported by The Guardian, he said flu in early May had also disrupted his preparation and that he only began training properly in July. He attributed his growing confidence to recent races, describing a gradual improvement in how strong and comfortable he felt.

Despite the win, Ingebrigtsen did not commit to contesting Sunday's 1,500m against Josh Kerr. He said he would assess how he felt after sleeping. His participation therefore remained uncertain after the 5,000m, with no confirmed decision reported. The distance victory nevertheless gave him a first-place finish on the opening night of the new championships following his interrupted preparation.

Britain's Jazmin Sawyers finished second in the women's long jump behind Italy's Larissa Iapichino, recording 6.78 metres with her final attempt. The runner-up finish earned Sawyers $75,000 and added to a season that had already brought Commonwealth gold and European silver. The Guardian also reported bronze for Britain's mixed 4x100m relay team, anchored by Success Eduan, behind the United States and Jamaica.

Other opening-night winners included Mondo Duplantis, who cleared 6.25 metres in the pole vault, and Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who won the high jump with 1.99 metres. Keely Hodgkinson advanced by winning her semi-final in 1:57.57. The meeting had two days remaining after Friday's competition, with further finals still to be decided.
