Indianapolis Colts Undergo Major Roster Overhaul Heading Into 2026 Season
The Indianapolis Colts have executed a sweeping roster transformation this offseason, trading away veteran starters and signing nine new players as general manager Chris Ballard reloads for a playoff push.

The Indianapolis Colts entered the 2026 offseason with a clear mandate: reload, not rebuild. General manager Chris Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen are both back for another run, but nearly everything around them has changed on the roster.

The Colts said goodbye to several familiar faces during free agency. Defensive end Samson Ebukam, defensive tackle Tyquan Lewis, and linebacker Nick Cross are among the notable names not returning. The same goes for veteran offensive lineman Braden Smith, who had been a pillar of stability up front for years.

Perhaps the most significant departures came via trade. Indianapolis sent linebacker Zaire Franklin to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for defensive end Colby Wooden. More dramatically, the Colts dealt wide receiver Michael Pittman to Pittsburgh in a late-round pick swap that signals a shift in offensive philosophy. Kenny Moore, a longtime defensive leader, also appears likely to land elsewhere before the season opens.

The Colts have been aggressive in replacing that talent. They signed nine outside free agents, headlined by defensive end Arden Key, defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, and cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt. They also added defensive end Micheal Clemons, linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither, wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, safety Jonathan Owens, and defensive tackle Jerry Tillery in an effort to deepen a defense that struggled at times in 2025.

On the offensive side, wide receiver Alec Pierce, tight end Mo Alie-Cox, and offensive tackle Luke Tenuta all re-signed. The team also brought back kicker Blake Grupe and added quarterback Daniel Jones, who will compete for backup snaps behind whomever wins the starting job.

Earlier in the offseason, the Colts signed 19 players to futures deals in January, including running back Ulysses Bentley, quarterback Seth Henigan, and a group of young offensive linemen looking to earn spots in training camp.

One retention that drew attention was linebacker Austin Ajiake, who signed a one-year extension in January. Ajiake emerged as a reliable piece of the defense last season and will now have a chance to build on that momentum.

The big question remains unanswered: has this roster gotten meaningfully better? The Colts added experience and depth across both lines, but they lost significant production at receiver and at the heart of their defense. Ballard has bet heavily on youth and versatility paying off in year two of whatever offensive system Shane Steichen is building. Whether that bet pays dividends will be one of the more compelling storylines heading into the 2026 season.
