Indian Cricket Needs Clear Direction on Kohli and Sharma World Cup Futures
The Indian cricket establishment finds itself in an unusual predicament where two of its greatest ever players remain shrouded in uncertainty despite their stellar recent performances and clear commitment to representing the nation at the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, former ODI captains who have defined Indian cricket for the past two decades, continue facing non-committal responses regarding their inclusion in next year World Cup plans. This ongoing ambiguity stands in stark contrast to the clear long-term visions expressed by other key figures in Indian cricket.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir has publicly stated his desire to remain until the Los Angeles Olympics, while chief selector Ajit Agarkar wants to continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup. T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has set his sights on 2028, and ODI captain Shubman Gill has targeted the South African tournament as his ultimate goal.
Yet the two players with the most extensive ODI experience continue receiving vague responses when their World Cup futures are discussed. Standard responses include There is still time left, the World Cup is nearly two years away, and we want to focus on the present.
The only reassuring public backing came in October 2025 when Gill supported both veterans. Absolutely, Gill said when asked if he saw Rohit and Kohli playing important roles in ODIs leading to the World Cup. The experience the two of them have is immense, and there are very few players who can match the number of matches they have won for India.
Less than a week later, however, coach Gambhir urged everyone to stay in the present. The 50-over World Cup is still two-and-a-half years away, and I think it is very important to stay in the present, he said following India victory over West Indies in the Test series.
Since then, both players have demonstrated exceptional form across multiple series against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, while also featuring in domestic List A competition during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Rohit has undergone remarkable physical transformation, losing significant weight according to Brendon McCullum, while Kohli has displayed renewed intensity and intent.
Kohli particularly has switched to beast mode, recording four centuries and four half-centuries in his last 10 fifty-over appearances. Rohit experienced quieter performances against New Zealand but looked menacing during series against South Africa and Australia.
Both right-handers clearly view the 2027 World Cup as unfinished business following their disappointment three years ago, and their commitment to extending their careers demonstrates their hunger for redemption on cricket biggest stage.
The uncertainty creates an unnecessarily tense atmosphere within the ODI setup, with reports suggesting some senior players are limiting conversations with coaching staff and restricting interactions with selectors to formal pleasantries. This dagger of insecurity hanging over their heads is not ideal for any Indian dressing room.
With India facing a packed ODI calendar leading to next year World Cup, the BCCI must initiate direct dialogue with both players. Not to discuss the players plans, but to clarify the board plans and whether these cricket legends feature in their World Cup blueprint.
Given that other one-format cricketers can look two years ahead, selectors can seek extended tenures, and coaches can express desires to continue beyond official terms, the least Kohli and Sharma deserve is transparent communication about their World Cup prospects.
The time for indirect messaging through press conferences has passed Indian cricket needs decisive leadership and clear direction.
