India retain Asian Games cricket gold with 19-run win over Pakistan
India retained the men's Asian Games cricket title with a 19-run victory over Pakistan in Japan on Saturday, October 3. BBC Sport reported that India made 211-6 before restricting Pakistan to 192-6 in the final. Half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma gave India a total that survived Hasan Nawaz's response of 96.
Watch the highlights:
India's opening assault brought 24 runs from the second over, bowled by Saad Masood, according to ANI's innings report. Pakistan then removed Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for 15 and Sanju Samson for two, but Abhishek continued attacking. He reached his half-century from 20 balls, and India ended the six-over powerplay on 81-2 despite the loss of those two early wickets.
Abhishek was stumped off Arafat Minhas in the eighth over after scoring 61 from 28 deliveries, with seven sixes and three fours. Pakistan subsequently dismissed Ishan Kishan for 20 and captain Shreyas Iyer for 21. ANI reported that India were 142-5 after 16 overs, leaving Tilak and Shivam Dube to rebuild the scoring rate in the closing stages.
The pair responded by taking 23 runs from the 19th over, bowled by Saim Ayub. Dube was dismissed for 27 from 15 balls at the start of the final over, but Tilak hit consecutive sixes and completed his fifty. His unbeaten 51 from 22 deliveries included three fours and four sixes, helping India finish beyond the 200 mark.
Pakistan's pursuit faltered early as they slipped to 39-3, BBC Sport reported. Nawaz kept the innings moving with seven sixes during his 51-ball stay, but his effort did not carry Pakistan to the target of 212. He was dismissed from the final delivery of the match, four runs short of a century.
India's six wickets were divided equally among three bowlers. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar each returned 2-29, while Dube added 2-33 to his contribution with the bat. Those performances completed India's successful title defence: Pakistan matched India's six wickets lost but finished 19 runs behind, leaving Nawaz's innings as the leading individual score in a losing effort.
