Iliman Ndiaye says Manchester City call was impossible to refuse

Iliman Ndiaye says the opportunity to join Manchester City was impossible to turn down after he completed a deadline-day move from Everton. Speaking after his first appearance for the club, the Senegal international said Champions League football was central to his decision and described City as one of the world's leading teams, according to BBC Sport.

The 26-year-old moved for an initial £60 million, with Sky Sports reporting that the deal could rise by a further £5 million in bonuses. He signed a five-year contract and went straight into the starting lineup for City's 1-0 Premier League victory over Coventry. BBC Sport reported that Ndiaye attempted eight dribbles on his debut, more than any other player in the match.

Ndiaye had also been close to joining Tottenham. The BBC reported that Spurs had agreed a deal with Everton during the final week of the transfer window but could not proceed after failing to sell Richarlison. Ndiaye said he remained patient while his future was being decided and was delighted when Manchester City entered the process.

Leaving Everton still carried an emotional cost. Ndiaye said he had built a strong connection with the club's supporters and his former teammates during two seasons there. He scored 17 goals across those campaigns despite Everton finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League in both, and his ability on the flanks made him a popular figure among fans.

The transfer continues a career that began outside the professional leagues with Boreham Wood. Ndiaye later played for Hyde United, close to City's Etihad Stadium, before establishing himself in the Championship with Sheffield United. A season at Marseille followed, then a move to Everton in 2024 for a reported £15 million.

Ndiaye said he had worked throughout his career to reach a club competing for the biggest prizes and believes he now belongs at that level. His first City start delivered a win and an immediate role in the side, while the five-year agreement gives him the chance to establish himself in domestic competition and the Champions League.
