Iga Swiatek ends 2026 season after thigh injury forces Ningbo withdrawal
Iga Swiatek has ended her 2026 season after withdrawing from the Ningbo Open with a left thigh injury, bringing her pursuit of a WTA Finals place to a close. The six-time Grand Slam champion announced on Tuesday that she would take a longer break to recover before returning next year.
Watch the highlights:
According to the WTA's report, Swiatek said the thigh problem had persisted for several weeks and that allowing time for rest was the right decision. She had been seeded second in Ningbo but will not compete at the tournament. Alternate Anastasia Zakharova has taken her place in the draw following the withdrawal.
In a subsequent Instagram statement reported by the WTA, Swiatek confirmed that the decision extended beyond Ningbo and that she would play no more tournaments this year. She described the season as particularly demanding, referring to the challenges and changes she had faced, while expressing pride in her team's work during the second half of the campaign.
BBC Sport reported that the 25-year-old will miss qualification for the WTA Finals for the first time since 2019. The former world number one is now ranked ninth. Her only WTA title of the season came at the Canadian Open in August, and she finishes a year without a Grand Slam trophy for the first time since 2021.
Swiatek's last tournament appearance ended with a semi-final defeat by fellow Pole Maja Chwalinska at the Wuhan Open on Saturday. BBC Sport reported that she received treatment on her thigh but continued playing. That defeat came after an improved stretch of results: it was only her fourth loss in her most recent 23 matches.
Her most recent major title remains Wimbledon in 2025. Looking towards 2027, the Australian Open in January offers an opportunity to complete the career Grand Slam, BBC Sport noted. For now, Swiatek has chosen an extended recovery period after describing the intensity of the past several years and saying she needed to let her body recover fully.
