Hunt Champions Academic Excellence Among Female Athletes at World Indoors
British sprinter Amy Hunt continues advocating for female athletes pursuing higher education while competing at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland.

Amy Hunt continues to champion the cause of academic achievement among female athletes as she prepares to compete at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland, building on the inspiring message that captured global attention following her breakthrough world silver medal performance.

The 23-year-old British sprinter, who graduated from Cambridge University with an English Literature degree in 2023, delivered one of sports most memorable quotes after claiming 200m silver at the World Championships in Tokyo. Her spontaneous declaration that young girls can be an academic badass and a track goddess resonated far beyond the athletics community.

As soon as I said it, I was like, oh my gosh, Im on the BBC. I was like, are they going to bleep that out? Hunt recalls with amusement. I was so incredibly high with adrenaline and endorphins that there wasnt a connection between my brain and my mouth.

While Hunt initially worried about the appropriateness of her language, the impact proved overwhelmingly positive. Six months later, she finds herself inundated with messages from young female athletes seeking guidance on balancing sporting excellence with academic pursuits.

Theres so many girls that message me every single day. I reply to as many as I can, especially those trying to go through the Oxbridge system, Hunt explains. Ive helped a couple of girls get into Cambridge and some of them Im now close friends with.

The Cambridge graduate has transformed her platform into a vehicle for empowerment, declining invitations to movie premieres and fashion weeks to focus on athletics and mentorship responsibilities. Her commitment to opening doors for the next generation reflects the demanding path she navigated to reach elite status.

Hunts journey from teenage prodigy to world medalist encompassed significant obstacles. After breaking the under-18 200m world record with a stunning 22.42-second performance in 2019, injuries disrupted her early senior career. A ruptured quadriceps in 2022 complicated her efforts to balance Cambridge studies with international competition demands.

I didnt want to take the easy way. Thats not me and that doesnt inform anything I do. I have to always try and be the best every single day, Hunt emphasizes.

Now training under coach Marco Airale in Padova, Italy, Hunt has her sights set on ambitious goals for the current season. She aims to break three British records while pursuing three European titles, demonstrating the relentless drive that characterizes her approach to both athletics and academics.

The 60m event at the World Indoor Championships represents her least favorite discipline, with her 5ft 10in frame creating challenges off the blocks. However, Hunt recognizes the indoor season as crucial preparation for longer distances, where her natural ability truly flourishes.

Longer-term aspirations include expanding into the 400m and targeting up to four Olympic medals at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, achievements she believes would establish her as a sporting icon.

Beyond personal success, Hunt plans to establish a scholarship program similar to British rapper Stormzys initiative supporting black students at Cambridge. Her vision extends to creating systemic change that makes elite education more accessible to athletes from diverse backgrounds.

Talking about it opens it up a lot more and enables more women and girls from an athletic background to be able to get there, Hunt explains. Its about having a conversation and helping them be more confident.

As she competes in Poland this weekend, Hunt carries the responsibility of representation alongside her medal ambitions, proving that the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence need not be mutually exclusive pursuits.
