Hull Stun Manchester United on Premier League Return
Hull City made a winning return to the Premier League by beating Manchester United at the MKM Stadium on Saturday. According to The Guardian’s match report, central defenders Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy supplied the goals as the promoted club capitalised on Manchester United’s problems defending set pieces.
Watch the highlights:
Hull created the clearer early danger. Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens saved an attempt from Oli McBurnie and then tipped a forceful Ryan Giles cross over the bar. The resulting corner was delivered toward the near post and redirected across goal, where McBurnie found room for a shot. Lammens stopped that effort on the line, but Ajayi reacted first and drove in the rebound.
The hosts extended their advantage from another dead-ball delivery. Youri Tielemans conceded a free kick, and Regan Slater sent the ball into the penalty area. Mendy reached it at close range and headed home, scoring on his Hull debut. The two goals rewarded a first-half performance in which McBurnie’s movement and physical play caused persistent problems for the visitors.
Manchester United began with Matheus Cunha operating as a false nine rather than using a conventional centre-forward. Manager Michael Carrick made a change at the interval, replacing the booked Patrick Dorgu with Marcus Rashford. Rashford wore the number nine shirt and attacked from the left, but Hull’s defence dealt with the increased pressure.
Carrick made further substitutions with 23 minutes remaining, taking off debutants Andrey Santos and Tielemans after neither had established control of the match. Hull did not need to chase another goal in the second half. Instead, the home side protected its lead through disciplined positioning and organisation while United struggled to create a decisive opening.
The result gave Hull an immediate statement victory following promotion and left Manchester United with a defeat in Carrick’s first league match since receiving the permanent appointment. United are scheduled to face Ipswich at home next, while Hull can build on a performance shaped by effective deliveries, aggressive defending and two decisive contributions from their centre-backs.
