Hull City Hid Back-Five Plan Before 2-0 Manchester United Win

Hull City marked their return to the Premier League with a 2-0 home victory over Manchester United on Saturday, using a tactical change that had been concealed throughout pre-season. BBC Sport reported that first-half goals from defenders Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy secured Hull's first league win over United since 1974.

The match was Hull's first in the top flight for nine years after Sergej Jakirovic's team earned promotion through last season's Championship play-offs. United arrived after finishing third in the Premier League last season, but Hull limited the visitors while operating with a back five and won despite recording only 28% possession.

Hull assistant head coach Dean Holden told BBC Match of the Day that Jakirovic had considered the back-five system for three or four weeks. The manager deliberately kept the plan out of Hull's pre-season matches, when the team used a back four, so opponents would not receive an early view of the intended setup.

According to Holden, Hull's preparation included footage from Manchester United's 4-2 pre-season defeat by AC Milan, when switches of play toward the wing-backs caused problems for United's defence. Hull also used material from Leeds, who had deployed a back three against United a week before the Premier League opener, to show players comparable patterns within the system.

Holden said Hull were accustomed to working without the ball rather than being forced into an unfamiliar approach after promotion. He identified the team's mid-block and counter-attacking play as strengths. The result followed a promotion campaign in which Hull reached the play-offs only on the final day, finished sixth and then beat Middlesbrough in the final. BBC Sport noted they were the first sixth-placed side in 16 years to win the Championship play-offs.

The change in Hull's position has been rapid. In the 2024-25 season, the club avoided relegation to League One on goal difference after a 1-1 draw with Portsmouth on the final day. Three players who started that match also started against Manchester United. Holden said Hull's objective remains staying in the Premier League, while the opening performance and result provided confidence and belief for the promoted squad.
