Hufanga interceptions seal Broncos comeback from 16-0 down against Rams

The Denver Broncos recovered from a 16-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Rams 30-26 on Sunday, with Talanoa Hufanga making two decisive interceptions. BBC Sport reported that the safety returned the first for a 66-yard touchdown before intercepting Matthew Stafford in the end zone on the game's final play, ending the Rams' last chance to win.

Denver erased the halftime gap in the third quarter, setting up a finish featuring three lead changes in the final five minutes. After Hufanga's touchdown return, Stafford answered with a 48-yard scoring pass to Konata Mumpfield. Bo Nix then took Denver downfield and reached the end zone himself, leaving Los Angeles 47 seconds to respond.

The BBC noted that this was the first multiple-interception game of Hufanga's six-year NFL career. Both teams had lost last season's conference championship games and entered Sunday's meeting after recovering from disappointing season openers with victories the previous week. Their encounter ended with Denver completing another comeback and Los Angeles unable to protect its early advantage.

The Associated Press report carried by Sportsnet detailed how Denver rebuilt its position. Nix found Pat Bryant for a five-yard touchdown and Jaylen Waddle for the two-point conversion. An eight-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins followed, with Bryant catching another conversion to level the score. Harrison Mevis subsequently kicked his fourth field goal to put the Rams back ahead, 19-16.

According to that report, Denver's winning possession covered 65 yards in 10 plays and included three defensive penalties. A pass-interference call against Justin Wallace cancelled a potential interception and gave the Broncos fresh downs near the goal line. Nix completed the drive with his scoring keeper, putting Denver ahead with less than a minute remaining.

Stafford still reached Denver's 14-yard line and stopped the clock with two seconds left. A false start pushed the Rams back five yards before Hufanga ended the contest. Denver improved to 2-1, while Los Angeles fell to 1-2. Hufanga also recorded a sack, a tackle for loss, a quarterback hit and three pass breakups.
