Huddersfield Giants Stun Super League Leaders Wigan with Historic 34-16 Victory
Huddersfield Giants delivered the shock result of the Super League season, dismantling previously unbeaten leaders Wigan Warriors 34-16 at The Brick Community Stadium to end their own winless streak while simultaneously destroying the Warriors perfect start to the campaign.
The Giants, who entered the match anchored at the bottom of the table with five consecutive defeats, produced a stunning attacking display that netted six tries after managing just eight scores in their previous five matches combined.
Jacob Gagai, Tanguy Zenon, and Niall Evalds gave Huddersfield a commanding 16-0 advantage during the opening period, setting the tone for what would become one of the most comprehensive upsets in recent Super League memory.
Wigan head coach Matt Peet acknowledged his team complete inability to match their opponents intensity and quality throughout the contest.
"We weren not good enough and Huddersfield were very good. They deserved the win and they deserved the scoreline. It wasn close," Peet admitted after watching his side surrender their unbeaten record.
The victory proved particularly emotional for Huddersfield, coming just days after head coach Luke Robinson departure following the team disastrous start to the season. Interim coach Liam Finn expressed mixed feelings about the triumph.
"It really bittersweet emotions throughout the dressing room, the coaching staff and me myself," Finn reflected. "Being happy to win and get off the mark, but bitterly disappointed that my mate Robbo - who put the team together - is not here."
The Giants were able to welcome back crucial reinforcements for this fixture, with captain Adam Clune and full-back Evalds making their first appearances of 2026 after recovering from injuries that had decimated the squad early in the campaign.
Zenon second try came after a successful captain challenge overturned the referee initial no-try decision, while Evalds reacted quickest to a loose ball from Adam Keighran to extend the lead.
Wigan managed to respond through Zach Eckersley flying finish, but their momentum was quickly halted by determined Giants defending that prevented any sustained comeback attempt.
Jacob Douglas, making his debut after joining on loan from St Helens, crossed for his first Huddersfield try after a magnificent long pass from Tom Burgess created the scoring opportunity.
Connor Wrench, playing his first match since coming out of retirement, added another score to establish a 20-point advantage that effectively sealed the victory.
Clune capped the scoring rampage with perhaps the try of the season, finishing a move featuring brilliant offloads and handling that allowed the captain to run through unopposed.
Jack Farrimond and Liam Farrell managed consolation tries for Wigan, but their efforts proved insufficient against a Giants team that had rediscovered their attacking prowess at the perfect moment.
The match also made history as the first Super League game officiated by a female referee, with Tara Jones delivering an excellent performance that showcased her authority and composure throughout the contest.
Jones, who received her MBE earlier in the week for services to rugby league, handled the pressure admirably and made several crucial decisions that stood up to video review scrutiny.
The shock result moves Huddersfield level on points with Leigh Leopards, providing hope that their season can be salvaged despite the challenging start.
For Wigan, the defeat serves as a stark reminder that maintaining perfection throughout a Super League campaign requires consistent performance levels that proved elusive against inspired opposition.
Peet acknowledged that his team had been warned about potential complacency following their close encounter with York the previous week.
"We hoped that scare would give us a kick up the backside, but it was not to be," he concluded.
The Warriors remain two points clear at the Super League summit ahead of Warrington Wolves and Wakefield Trinity, but this comprehensive defeat will force serious reflection about their championship aspirations.
