Hridoy retires hurt on 42 as Bangladesh reach 198 for three
Tawhid Hridoy retired hurt on 42 as Bangladesh reached 198 for three after 66 overs on the opening day of the first Test against West Indies in Mirpur on Wednesday. BBC Sport's live scorecard, checked on October 28, listed Hridoy as retired hurt, with Shadman Islam unbeaten on 94 and Litton Kumer Das newly at the crease.
Watch the highlights:
Hridoy had faced 84 deliveries and struck three fours before his innings was interrupted. His departure brought Das into the middle without adding a fourth dismissal to Bangladesh's total. The scorecard did not explain the nature of Hridoy's problem or indicate whether he would be able to resume batting, so the interruption did not establish that his involvement in the innings was over.
Shadman remained six runs short of a century after facing 199 balls, with 10 boundaries accounting for 40 of his runs. Das had yet to face a delivery at the same update. Bangladesh's total had advanced by 88 since the dismissal of captain Najmul Hossain Shanto at 110 for three, with Hridoy contributing 42 before retiring hurt.
Bangladesh had elected to bat at the Shere Bangla National Stadium but lost Tanzid Hasan Tamim for seven with the score on nine. Jayden Seales took that wicket, with Justin Greaves completing the catch. Mominul Haque then made 28 from 51 balls before being caught by Shamar Joseph off Jomel Warrican, leaving the hosts 68 for two in the 22nd over.
Warrican also dismissed Shanto lbw for 19, securing both of his wickets before Bangladesh's subsequent recovery. At the 66-over checkpoint, he had figures of two for 28 from 11 overs, while Seales had one for 14 from eight. Joshua Bishop had delivered 16 overs for 45 runs without a wicket, the largest workload among the six West Indies bowlers used.
The first day's play was still in progress and West Indies had not begun their reply. Bangladesh's immediate position therefore remained a live first-innings total rather than a completed score, with Shadman still batting and Hridoy's ability to return unconfirmed in the available scorecard.
