Howard Bison Women Ready to Challenge Ohio State Behind Twin Towers
The HBCU enters March Madness on a 14-game winning streak led by forward duo Nile Miller and Zennia Thomas, plus MEAC Freshman of the Year Ariella Henigan.

Howard University women basketball team arrives at the NCAA Tournament riding unprecedented momentum, carrying a 14-game winning streak and both MEAC regular season and conference tournament titles into their challenging first-round matchup against third-seeded Ohio State.

The Bison success centers around their imposing forward tandem of Nile Miller and Zennia Thomas, who have formed what expert analysts describe as pillars of solid steel and unfiltered fire respectively. This dynamic duo provides Howard with the foundation necessary to compete against higher-seeded opponents in March Madness.

Miller represents the consistent, efficient pillar who impacts games through fundamental excellence rather than flashy displays. Her steady approach includes timely steals, crucial blocks, aggressive rebounding, and scoring when needed most. She then seamlessly transitions to defensive responsibilities where her reliability anchors Howard schemes.

Thomas brings contrasting energy after transferring from Kentucky two years ago. Her emotional leadership manifests through vocal encouragement, chest-pounding celebrations, and passionate demonstrations that energize teammates and crowds alike. Thomas possesses smooth moves around the rim, tenacious rebounding instincts, and shot-blocking prowess that intimidates opposing offenses.

The former Wildcat also displays versatility with soft mid-range shooting and an effective turnaround shot that provides Howard with offensive options when games require half-court execution. Coaches utilize Thomas as their primary offensive focal point during crucial moments when games need calming or opposing scoring runs require answers.

Complementing these veterans is MEAC Freshman of the Year Ariella Henigan, whose fearless approach and quick release have elevated Howard to championship levels. The Chicago native brings toughness and composure that prevents her from becoming flustered during high-pressure situations.

Henigan attacks the basket relentlessly while showcasing exceptional ball-handling skills including behind-the-back moves, crossovers, and pull-up shots from approximately ten feet. Her motor never stops running, and her recent scoring surge includes double figures in four of Howard last five contests.

Howard path to March Madness required overcoming Norfolk State, which had dominated MEAC competition for three consecutive years. The Bison accomplished this feat emphatically, claiming both regular season and tournament titles with decisive victories over their primary rivals.

This shared motivation fueled players who had experienced previous disappointments. Miller had lost to Norfolk State three straight years, Hemingway for two consecutive seasons, and Thomas suffered defeat the previous year. Their collective hunger translated into focused preparation and determined execution when championships were decided.

The experienced core understands game situations and maintains composure knowing they will eventually find ways to control contests. During their road victory at Norfolk, Zoe Stewart provided explosive offense with 14 first-quarter points, while she later delivered back-to-back shots in the title game to break a 27-27 tie and spark Howard victory.

Against Ohio State pace-and-pressure style, Howard defensive identity becomes crucial. The Bison prefer controlling tempo while utilizing players like Henigan and Stewart who embrace faster-paced competition. Thomas and Miller possess the athleticism and quickness necessary for transition basketball.

Howard demonstrated explosive potential earlier this season with a remarkable 32-0 run against Florida A&M, proving their capability for sustained excellence when three-point shooting falls consistently. Under coach Ty Grace leadership, the Bison believe they can compete effectively if they limit Ohio State to approximately 65 points while forcing the Buckeyes into difficult half-court offensive possessions.

The HBCU program makes its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2022, representing both validation of their season-long excellence and opportunity to showcase their talents on college basketball biggest stage against one of the tournament highest seeds.
