How 10 English teams could qualify for Europe next season with six in Champions League
Premier League clubs are set to benefit from UEFA's expanded European competition format, with up to ten English teams potentially competing across continental tournaments next season.
Watch the highlights:
Under the new structure, the top five Premier League finishers will qualify for the Champions League group stage, while the FA Cup winners secure Europa League football and the Carabao Cup winners enter the Europa Conference League.
Crucially, if a Premier League team wins either the Champions League or Europa League, that place can extend to a sixth English club entering the elite competition. Manchester City and Arsenal's deep runs in recent seasons have already demonstrated this pathway.
"The financial implications are substantial," explained football finance expert Kieran Sandhu. "Each Champions League group stage appearance is worth around £15-20 million minimum, with TV revenue sharing making a significant difference to club budgets."
The bottom two Europa League spots will be filled by the Champions League play-off round losers, while the Conference League path remains unchanged.
UEFA's changes aim to reduce fixture congestion while maximizing participation across European competitions. The new format begins with the 2024-25 season, with the Premier League likely to implement its own scheduling adjustments to accommodate additional European fixtures.
Clubs finishing fifth or sixth in the Premier League could now secure Champions League football if English teams perform well in UEFA competitions, creating an additional incentive for domestic consistency.
