Rune Sets Sights on Hamburg Return After Seven-Month Injury Layoff
Holger Rune is counting down the days until he returns to competitive tennis, with the Hamburg Open from May 17th marking his comeback after seven months on the sidelines. The Dane suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon at the Stockholm Open last year, but has completed an extensive rehabilitation programme and is now ready to resume his career.
The 21-year-old, who has been ranked as high as world number four, currently sits at number 27 in the ATP standings. Remarkably, given the severity of his injury and the length of his absence, he has not dropped as far as many expected, still sitting ahead of established names like Jack Draper and Arthur Fils.
Speaking ahead of his return, Rune outlined exactly what he is hoping to achieve. The Dane is refusing to set any ranking targets, instead focusing entirely on getting his body fully right for the demands of professional tennis.
It has been a long process, Rune admitted. We are following very strictly what the people I did the rehab with are saying, and my strength in my Achilles is very, very good. I just cannot wait to be back playing soon. I really missed it. Now, watching a lot of tennis, it is creeping in me that I want to get back.
That hunger is understandable. Rune only made one semi-final appearance throughout 2025, a disappointing return that he will be eager to improve upon. With a full off-season of training behind him and no residual issues from his rehabilitation, he believes he can return as an even stronger player than before his injury.
The goal is not simply to be able to compete, Rune made clear. I would rather wait to play than come back and feel okay but maybe a bit stiff in my foot after a few games. The goal is to be ready in Hamburg, fully ready, so I can play five hours and not have any issues. That is the goal. To be back as an even better version than I was before.
Such caution is prudent. Achilles injuries at the elite level carry significant risk of re-injury, and Rune medical team will have mapped out a careful progression. The Hamburg Open, a clay-court event with best-of-three set matches in the early rounds, represents a sensible first target rather than jumping straight into the demands of a best-of-five Grand Slam.
Rune potential is undeniable. When fully fit and firing, he possesses the aggressive baseline game capable of troubling any player in the world. His victory over Novak Djokovic at the 2022 Paris Masters remains one of the most impressive performances by anyone that season.
Whether he can recapture that form immediately upon his return remains to be seen. Seven months away from competitive tennis is a long time, and rust is inevitable. But if his recovery continues to hold up well during his first matches back, do not be surprised if Rune finds his best form again sooner rather than later.
The countdown to Hamburg has begun. For tennis fans, his return is one of the most anticipated comebacks of the season.
