Hodgkinson Claims First World Indoor Title with Championship Record Performance
The transformed British star capped a remarkable comeback season by dominating the 800m field with a time of 1:55.30 in Poland.

Keely Hodgkinson delivered the performance of a lifetime to capture her first world indoor championship, obliterating the field in the women 800 meters with a stunning championship record time of 1:55.30 at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Poland.

The 24-year-old British sensation, who has embraced the nickname Keely 2.0 within her training group following an extensive physical rebuild, announced her intentions for 2026 with a single word: domination. Her commanding victory on Sunday evening proved she was not speaking in hyperbole.

My word this year has been domination, Hodgkinson explained to BBC Sport after her historic triumph. When I am in the shape of my life, why leave it to chance? If you want to beat me, I will make you work hard for it.

The victory represented the culmination of a remarkable journey back to the top following an injury-ravaged 2025 season. Two serious hamstring injuries had forced the Olympic champion to wait 376 days between competitive races, creating doubt about whether she could regain her previous form.

Hodgkinson championship record performance arrived exactly one month after she shattered the longstanding women indoor 800m world record previously held by Slovenia Jolanda Ceplak. Remarkably, that record had been set on the very day Hodgkinson was born in 2002, adding poetic significance to her breakthrough achievement.

The triumph made history in multiple ways, as Hodgkinson became Britain first-ever women 800m world champion in either indoor or outdoor competition. Her margin of victory - more than a full second ahead of her nearest competitor - demonstrated the gulf between her current form and the rest of the world.

Her gold medal capped an extraordinary 28-minute period for British athletics, following victories by training partner Georgia Hunter Bell and pole vaulter Molly Caudery. Combined with Josh Kerr 3,000m triumph from Saturday, Britain secured their most successful World Indoor Championships in history, surpassing their previous best of three gold medals from 1999.

The path to glory was not without obstacles. Hodgkinson faced adversity even before competition began when her airline lost her equipment, forcing her to train in borrowed spikes that caused uncomfortable blisters. Such setbacks would have derailed lesser athletes, but the Olympic champion demonstrated the mental fortitude that separates champions from competitors.

Hodgkinson superiority was evident throughout the weekend, as she dominated her heat on Friday before cruising through Saturday semi-final with a time faster than all but one of her fellow finalists personal bests. Only Switzerland Audrey Werro possessed an indoor best within three seconds of Hodgkinson world record mark.

The venue held special significance for the British star, who captured her first international medal at the same facility in Torun five years ago. That breakthrough European indoor title launched her meteoric rise to Olympic silver and eventual global dominance.

Despite her individual success, Hodgkinson competitive spirit remained evident as she returned to the track less than an hour after her gold medal ceremony. Running the anchor leg for Britain 4x400m relay team, she posted the fastest split of any athlete with a blistering 50.10-second effort, though it proved insufficient to overcome an insurmountable deficit.

The victory positions Hodgkinson perfectly for what promises to be an exceptional summer season, with European and Commonwealth titles available on home soil. Her historic indoor form has also intensified speculation about a potential assault on athletics most enduring record - Jarmila Kratochvilova 43-year-old outdoor 800m world record of 1:53.28.
