Higgins hits 115 as Middlesex dent Northamptonshire promotion hopes

Ryan Higgins scored 115 and took four wickets as Middlesex established a 152-run first-innings lead over Northamptonshire at Lord's on Thursday. The visitors were dismissed for 103 before Middlesex recovered from 32-4 to make 255, damaging Northamptonshire's bid to overtake Kent for promotion from County Championship Division Two.

According to the ECB Reporters' Network account published by BBC Sport, Higgins returned 4-30 and Danru Ferns 4-29 after Northamptonshire chose to bat. James Sales resisted with 43, but the visitors could not build a substantial total. Captain Luke Procter had fallen without scoring in the opening over.

Ben Sanderson then took Middlesex's first four wickets and finished with 4-68. Ben Geddes made 57 to launch the recovery, while Higgins shared stands of 69 with Harry Duke and 62 with Zafar Gohar. Duke contributed 28 as Middlesex turned their own early collapse into a sizeable advantage.

The innings followed Higgins' century in Sunday's One-Day Cup final against Leicestershire. Independent Middlesex publication Up the Middle reported that he made 100 from 115 balls at Trent Bridge, hitting nine fours. That was his first List A hundred, and it helped Middlesex claim their first trophy in the format for 36 years.

In that final, Higgins and Duke had added 135 for the sixth wicket after Middlesex slipped to 71-5. Duke scored 55 and the team reached 231 before winning by 31 runs. Toby Roland-Jones, Tom Helm and Naavya Sharma each took three wickets to complete the turnaround, according to Up the Middle's report.

Northamptonshire's promotion rivals also had a productive Thursday. BBC Sport's separate Canterbury report put Kent at 71-1 after bowling Gloucestershire out for 229, with Matt Milnes taking 4-55. Ben Compton finished unbeaten on 33 and Sam Northeast on 27 after Zak Crawley's early dismissal. Kent entered the match needing 20 points to guarantee promotion. They had earned three by the close, so promotion was not yet secured; their first-innings deficit remained 158 runs.
