Hibernian Sign Manchester United Midfielder Jacob Devaney on Season-Long Loan

Hibernian have signed Manchester United midfielder Jacob Devaney on a season-long loan, with the Scottish Premiership club holding an option to make the transfer permanent. The move remains subject to international clearance, according to Hibernian's announcement. Manchester United also confirmed that the 19-year-old will spend the 2026-27 campaign in Edinburgh. Hibernian announced the agreement on Sunday and said Devaney had joined the squad in the Scottish capital.

Devaney returns to Scotland after gaining senior experience with St Mirren during the second half of last season. BBC Sport reported that he made 18 appearances for the Paisley club, scoring once and supplying one assist while operating as a deep-lying playmaker. That spell gave him direct experience of the league he will now rejoin with Hibs.

The Barnsley-born midfielder entered Manchester United's academy at the age of six and made his under-18 debut when he was 15. He later captained United's under-21 side and was named the club's Youth Scholar of the Year in 2025. Devaney is also a Republic of Ireland under-21 international.

Devaney was involved with United's senior squad during preseason, appearing against Wrexham in Helsinki before coming off the bench and scoring in a 5-0 win over Rosenborg. Those outings followed his St Mirren loan and provided further first-team exposure before Hibernian completed the agreement.

Hibs head coach David Gray described Devaney as a technically talented young international who is eager to improve. Gray said the midfielder's previous Scottish Premiership experience should help him adjust to the squad. Sporting director Malky Mackay added that several clubs had shown interest and highlighted Devaney's background and familiarity with Scotland's top division.

Devaney said the opportunity to join Hibernian was an easy decision for him and his family, recalling the impression Easter Road made on him during a previous visit. The loan gives him the prospect of a full season of senior football, while the permanent option leaves Hibs with a route to retain him beyond the campaign if the move proves successful.
