Hibernian hold Gent scoreless to keep Conference League hopes alive
Hibernian earned a 0-0 first-leg draw away to Gent after Owen Elding’s penalty was saved, leaving the Conference League tie to be decided at Easter Road.

Hibernian returned from Belgium with a 0-0 draw against Gent, leaving their bid to reach the Conference League’s league phase in the balance ahead of the second leg in Edinburgh. BBC Scotland reported that about 1,000 travelling supporters watched David Gray’s side deliver a disciplined defensive performance at the Planet Group Arena on Thursday.

Watch the highlights:

The visitors had the clearest early chance after Warren O’Hora was fouled and Hibs were awarded a penalty. Owen Elding took the kick, but Gent goalkeeper and captain Davy Roef moved sharply to stop the 20-year-old’s effort. Roef had also played an important role in a penalty shootout against Cherkasy during the second qualifying round.

Gent had more of the ball for long periods, but Hibernian limited the Belgian side’s opportunities. BBC Scotland reported that goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger was not required to make a significant save. O’Hora, Jason Kerr and Jordan Obita formed the defensive unit as Hibs recorded a third consecutive clean sheet.

Gray said after the match that Hibernian had not carried enough attacking threat, but he praised the courage, physical effort and organisation of his players. He highlighted midfielders Josh Mulligan and Miguel Chaiwa while also stressing that the tie had reached only its halfway point and that qualification had not yet been achieved.

The result continued a solid European away run for Hibs following their performance against Shkendija in North Macedonia the previous week. Gent entered the match unbeaten in the early part of their domestic season and had advanced past Gothenburg to reach this tie. Despite controlling stretches of the first leg, the hosts could not turn that possession into a decisive advantage.

Hibernian will now take the tie back to Easter Road for the return match next Thursday. A victory would make this the first Hibs team to reach the league phase or group stage of a European competition, according to BBC Scotland. The report said advancement would also bring a financial return exceeding £5 million, adding further weight to a second leg that could require extra time or penalties if the teams remain level.
