Hibernian Hold Gent to Goalless Draw in Belgium
Hibernian secured a 0-0 draw away to KAA Gent on Thursday, leaving their Conference League tie level before the return match in Edinburgh. BBC Sport Scotland reported that the visitors produced a disciplined defensive performance at the Planet Group Arena in front of about 1,000 travelling supporters.
Watch the highlights:
Gent controlled much of the early possession and restricted Hibernian’s ability to advance into the home half. The Scottish side nevertheless received the clearest opportunity of the match when Warren O’Hora was fouled and a penalty was awarded. Twenty-year-old Owen Elding took the kick, but Gent goalkeeper and captain Davy Roef saved his effort.
Elding continued after the miss and received support from his teammates. O’Hora told BBC Scotland after the match that the forward apologised at half-time before urging the team to maintain its performance. The captain said Elding did not retreat from the contest and had nothing to worry about following the saved penalty.
Hibernian’s back line, including O’Hora, Jason Kerr and Jordan Obita, kept Gent from turning territorial control into clear chances. Goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger was not required to produce a major save, according to the BBC report, as the visitors completed a third consecutive clean sheet.
Manager David Gray described the display as a strong away performance while cautioning that Hibernian had not yet achieved qualification. The Edinburgh club are trying to reach the league phase of a European competition for the first time, with the second leg at Easter Road now carrying the full weight of that bid.
Gent entered the match unbeaten in the early part of their domestic season after eliminating Gothenburg in the previous round. Hibernian arrived with confidence from an earlier away performance against Shkendija in North Macedonia. The scoreless first leg means victory for either side in Edinburgh will secure progression, while another draw could extend the contest through extra time and potentially penalties.
