Hewett and Reid Open Sixth US Open Doubles Title Bid With Victory

BBC Sport reports that Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid opened their attempt to win a sixth US Open wheelchair doubles title with a straight-sets victory in New York. The British top seeds defeated France's Stephane Houdet and China's Zhenxu Ji 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday, earning a place in the semi-finals of the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.

Hewett and Reid have already won the US Open doubles title together five times. Their latest opening-round result kept that pursuit moving and added another win to a partnership that has collected 25 Grand Slam doubles titles. Hewett is 28 and Reid is 34, and both are also scheduled to begin their singles campaigns on Wednesday.

Their semi-final opponents will be Tokito Oda of Japan and Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina. Oda and Fernandez arrive at the meeting as the defending champions after winning the wheelchair doubles title at Flushing Meadows in 2025. The match therefore places the British top seeds against the pair who claimed the most recent edition of the tournament.

Britain's Andy Lapthorne also made a winning start in the quad wheelchair doubles, according to the BBC Sport report. Lapthorne and his South African partner Leon Els beat the American team of David Wagner and Andrew Bogdanov 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. They took a closely contested opening set through the tie-break before completing the match with a more decisive second-set score.

The other British result on Tuesday went against Greg Slade. He and Australian partner Heath Davidson were beaten 6-0, 6-0 by top seeds Niels Vink of the Netherlands and Guy Sasson of Israel. Vink and Sasson entered the US Open after winning each of the first three Grand Slam tournaments of 2026.

That victory extended Vink and Sasson's run to wins at the past six major tournaments in total. The day's results left Hewett, Reid and Lapthorne with successful starts in New York, while Slade and Davidson exited against the leading seeds. For Hewett and Reid, the next confirmed step is a semi-final against the reigning champions as their bid for a sixth shared US Open crown continues.
