Henry Crocombe earns two-year deal as England name 39 contracted players
England have named 39 players on their updated cricket contract list, including an unprecedented two-year deal for uncapped pace bowler Henry Crocombe. BBC Sport reported that 30 players hold full central contracts and nine have development deals. Test captain Joe Root and white-ball captain Harry Brook are among 11 players awarded contracts running through to 30 September 2028.
Crocombe joins Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue among the specialist fast bowlers receiving multi-year agreements. He is also one of seven players earning a full central contract for the first time, alongside Emilio Gay, Jordan Cox, Dan Lawrence, Tom Banton, Sam Cook and Matthew Fisher. According to the BBC, the international retirements of Ben Stokes and Mark Wood freed budget space for the expanded group.
Brydon Carse remains on the list under an existing two-year agreement that expires in autumn 2027. The Durham fast bowler faces a Cricket Regulator charge concerning professional conduct following an incident outside a Derby nightclub in August. Derbyshire Police took no action over assault allegations after he was arrested and then de-arrested. The sporting disciplinary process remains separate and unresolved.
Director of cricket Rob Key told the Test Match Special podcast that Carse could play for England again, depending on the outcome of the regulator's case. Carse remains available for selection but has not joined an England squad since the incident while taking time away from international cricket. Key rejected the suggestion that the absence of a contract extension revealed England's position on the bowler's future.
Elsewhere, Ollie Robinson returns to the contract list after a two-year absence following his performances in the home Test summer. Shoaib Bashir retains his agreement as the only specialist red-ball spinner among the full central contracts. Mason Crane and Liam Patterson-White receive development deals, with the BBC describing those awards as an indication of possible future Test spin options.
England also announced changes to their coaching teams. Test head coach Stephen Fleming adds Richard Dawson, James Foster and Eric Simons, while Marcus Trescothick remains with the red-ball side. Brendon McCullum retains Sarah Taylor, Jeetan Patel and Tim Southee in the white-ball setup. Kevin Pietersen will also work with those teams before next year's 50-over World Cup in southern Africa.
