Henry Crocombe Takes Second Hat-Trick in Eight Days as Sussex Seize Control

Henry Crocombe claimed his second hat-trick in eight days as Sussex turned the County Championship match against Essex at Chelmsford in their favour. The BBC, carrying an ECB Reporters' Network account, reported that the 24-year-old seamer finished with 5-39 after Essex collapsed from 171-3 to 177 all out on the second day.

Crocombe's five wickets came within 14 deliveries and without conceding a run. After dismissing Charlie Allison lbw for 56, he trapped Simon Harmer and Zaman Akhter lbw with the first two balls of his ninth over. Shane Snater then played over the third delivery and lost his leg stump, completing the hat-trick. Jamie Porter later became Crocombe's fifth victim.

The burst followed Crocombe's first career hat-trick against Somerset at Hove the previous week. It also gave him his third five-wicket haul of the season. Crocombe is due to leave Sussex for Surrey at the end of the season, but his late spell ensured his current county gained a 98-run first-innings advantage in a match that had appeared much more evenly balanced.

Essex had moved relatively smoothly to 100-2 before the collapse. Allison struck eight boundaries and reached his half-century from 60 balls, while Dean Elgar shared a 58-run partnership with him. James Coles bowled Elgar, and Michael Pepper was lbw attempting to sweep Coles shortly after Allison's dismissal, opening the way for Crocombe to run through the lower order.

Earlier, Sussex extended their first innings to 275. Jack Leaning made 60, while Ari Karvelas scored 38 from 44 balls and helped add 62 runs for the final three wickets. Essex seamer Jamie Porter took 4-44 and secured his 600th first-class wicket when Karvelas edged behind, with Pepper completing his fifth catch of the innings.

Sussex then reached 90-4 in their second innings, with Coles unbeaten on 29, to close 188 runs ahead. Essex ended day two on three points to Sussex's four, with the rapid loss of seven wickets for six runs having transformed the contest. Eleven wickets fell after tea, leaving Sussex in control but with enough time remaining for the match to change again.
