Henderson scores first Chelsea goals in 5-1 win over Bournemouth
Jordan Henderson scored his first two Chelsea goals and supplied an assist in a 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth on 10 October. BBC Sport reported that the 36-year-old opened the scoring after 66 seconds, then set up Morgan Rogers before the match had reached three minutes. Henderson later added a free-kick from 25 yards to complete the scoring for Xabi Alonso's side.
Watch the highlights:
The performance made Henderson the third-oldest player to score and assist in the same match for Chelsea, behind Didier Drogba and Gianfranco Zola. He joined from Brentford on a free transfer during the summer, bringing experience to a squad that had been the Premier League's youngest. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and striker Danny Welbeck were also recruited as Chelsea signed three players aged over 30.
Henderson started alongside Moises Caicedo in midfield for the first time. Alonso praised more than his goals afterwards, saying the midfielder had contributed in several areas and that Chelsea had controlled most of the match. The manager also highlighted his team's defensive stability, although Bournemouth still found a way through when Evanilson scored following a set piece.
Caicedo was making his 150th Chelsea appearance and played 72 minutes before a planned substitution brought on Romeo Lavia. BBC Sport reported that the Ecuador international misplaced only two passes, achieved the highest pass-completion rate among Chelsea's starters and led his team in both tackles attempted and tackles won. In possession, he dropped between the defenders, allowing Josh Acheampong to advance.
Alonso described Caicedo as a key player and said Chelsea were a more complete team when their midfield functioned well. He also praised the understanding between Caicedo and Henderson, saying their contribution helped the players around them. Their first outing together came with other midfield options available in the squad, including Lavia and Reece James, who can also play in defence.
The result continued Chelsea's productive start in attack without ending their wait for a first league clean sheet. They have scored 15 goals in six matches, the highest total in the division, but have also conceded 13, with no side allowing more. Saturday's victory therefore added five goals to their tally while leaving a defensive target still unmet.
