Hemp double drives Manchester City comeback as Arsenal fall 10 points behind
Manchester City beat Arsenal 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, October 4, recovering from two deficits to record a fifth win from five Women's Super League matches. Lauren Hemp scored twice, while substitute Kerstin Casparij and Bunny Shaw also struck as the defending champions reached 15 points, according to City's official match report.
Watch the highlights:
Lisa Baum gave Arsenal the lead in the 43rd minute, but Hemp equalised in first-half stoppage time. Alessia Russo restored the visitors' advantage in the 49th minute. Casparij then scored in the 63rd, Hemp put City ahead in the 72nd and Shaw added the final goal in the 84th to complete the turnaround.
The result kept City two points above Chelsea, with London City Lionesses third on 12 points. City's next league fixture is at home to Brighton on October 18, following the international break. Arsenal, meanwhile, were left 10th and 10 points behind the leaders after five rounds, BBC Sport reported.
Hemp credited City's response to the team's collective determination. In comments to BBC Sport reproduced on the club's website, she said the players had competed for every ball and remained committed regardless of the opposition. She also acknowledged Arsenal's quality. City remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, having drawn their first two Women's Champions League matches, including a 1-1 result against Real Madrid before Sunday's victory.
For Arsenal, the defeat extended their winless league run to four matches, their longest such sequence since October 2023, according to BBC Sport. They have won only twice in seven games across all competitions this season. Russo's finish was her first league goal of the campaign; Arsenal had scored only twice in the WSL before their visit to Manchester.
Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers said a review of the season so far would take place during the international break. She maintained that she had energy for the job and believed there were solutions to the team's difficulties. BBC Sport reported that club sources continued to back her, while recognising that results had fallen below expectations.
