Hearts post £2.4m annual loss as investment talks continue
Hearts have reported a £2.4m loss for the year ending 30 June 2026, according to BBC Sport. Turnover exceeded £23m, a club record for a season without European competition, in the first full year of Brighton owner Tony Bloom's involvement at Tynecastle.
Watch the highlights:
The accounts show £1.8m gained from player trading and £7.8m spent on acquisitions. On the pitch, Hearts took their pursuit of a first Scottish league title in 66 years to the final day before losing to Celtic.
The absence of European revenue contrasts with the previous accounting period. In its statement covering the year to June 2025, Hearts reported turnover of £24.4m, supported by Conference League participation and commercial growth. The club also recorded donations totalling just under £6m from benefactors and the Foundation of Hearts, providing additional support for investment across the organisation.
That earlier statement put Bloom's equity investment at £9.86m, completed in June 2025. Hearts explained that the funding strengthened the balance sheet rather than appearing as income in the profit-and-loss figures. Net assets at that previous year-end stood at £27.6m.
The latest deficit had been anticipated. In an interview reported by the Edinburgh Evening News on 27 October, chairman Calum Paterson said Hearts had continued investing in the squad and wider club despite having no European income during the period. He described the spending as planned and funded, while stressing the need to increase revenue and maintain discipline over costs.
Paterson also linked the club's longer-term ambitions to improved recruitment, player development and a stronger trading model. He said the Jamestown Analytics partnership would support recruitment decisions, alongside efforts to expand commercial income. His stated objectives included competing for trophies and qualifying regularly for Europe, with further investment intended to strengthen the club over time.
BBC Sport reported that Hearts now expect a significant improvement in their next accounts through player trading. The club also described ongoing investment discussions positively, without announcing a completed agreement. Shareholders are due to meet at the annual meeting in early December.
