Hazlewood takes six as Australia beat South Africa by 214 runs in Durban
Australia defeated South Africa by 214 runs in Durban on Tuesday to take a 1-0 lead in their three-Test series. Josh Hazlewood finished with a Test-best 6-49, with Sky Sports reporting that the tourists completed the victory after lunch on the final day.
Watch the highlights:
South Africa began the morning on 102-4, facing a target of 421 but concentrating on batting through the day. According to the Associated Press, Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder kept Australia's attack at bay for almost two hours during the extended opening session. Their resistance meant the visitors had to wait for the first of the six wickets they needed.
Hazlewood made that breakthrough when wicketkeeper Alex Carey caught Mulder down the leg side for 29. Kyle Verreynne then fell for one, edging Matt Renshaw to Steve Smith in the slips. South Africa reached lunch at 166-6, with Markram unbeaten on 69 and Marco Jansen on seven, the AP reported.
Markram and Jansen continued their partnership beyond the interval, adding 45 for the seventh wicket before Hazlewood struck with the second new ball. He bowled Jansen for 35 and removed Simon Harmer without scoring in the same over. Those two dismissals left South Africa with only two wickets remaining and sharply reduced the support available to Markram.
Mitchell Starc ended Markram's innings at 75 from 237 deliveries, with Australia successfully reviewing the decision after an inside edge reached Carey. Hazlewood then dismissed Anrich Nortje to finish the match. South Africa's final four wickets had fallen for just five runs, according to Sky Sports.
Australia's advantage had been built around Renshaw's first-innings 190. ABC reported that his career-high score helped lift the tourists from 124-6 to 390. He shared an 86-run partnership with captain Pat Cummins and added another 134 alongside Nathan Lyon for the ninth wicket. Cummins contributed 43 and Lyon 27, providing the support that allowed Renshaw to turn a precarious innings into a substantial total.
Renshaw was named player of the match. He had also scored 82 in the second innings. The teams now move to Gqeberha for the second Test, scheduled to begin on October 18, with South Africa needing to respond to the opening defeat.
