Hazlewood takes career-best 6-49 as Australia win Durban Test by 214 runs
Josh Hazlewood took a career-best 6-49 as Australia defeated South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test in Durban on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. BBC Sport reported that the hosts were dismissed for 206 on the final day, ending their 12-match unbeaten run in Test cricket.
Watch the highlights:
Aiden Markram provided South Africa's longest resistance, making 75 from 237 deliveries and occupying the crease for almost six hours before Mitchell Starc had him caught by Alex Carey. Wiaan Mulder contributed 29 from 110 balls, but the hosts could not prevent Australia completing victory during the afternoon session.
Australia had made 390 in their first innings and declared their second at 314-6, with Matt Renshaw contributing 82 to that second total. South Africa's first-innings reply was 284. According to BBC Sport, coach Shukri Conrad identified the failure of several batters to convert starts in the first innings as a particular disappointment. The defeat was Temba Bavuma's first as Test captain.
The foundations of Australia's victory had been laid by Renshaw's 190, an innings that transformed their position after they had fallen to 124-6. The ICC's report of the second day detailed how Renshaw and Pat Cummins added 86 for the seventh wicket before Mulder dismissed the Australian captain. Starc's departure then left the visitors at 230-8.
Renshaw found another durable partner in Nathan Lyon. Their ninth-wicket stand produced 134 runs, which the ICC described as a Durban record for that wicket and Australia's second-highest ninth-wicket partnership. Lyon made 27 from 92 balls before falling lbw to Marco Jansen. Renshaw reached his second Test century, nine years after his first, and went on to his highest Test score.
Hazlewood then helped Renshaw add 26 for the final wicket before Simon Harmer ended the innings shortly after tea on day two. Australia now carry their series advantage to Gqeberha, where the second Test is scheduled for October 18-22. The third and final match is due to take place in Cape Town from October 27-31, according to the ICC's published schedule.
