Haynes and Patterson-White Centuries Put Nottinghamshire in Command

Jack Haynes struck a career-best 159 and Liam Patterson-White finished unbeaten on 111 as Nottinghamshire took firm control against Leicestershire on day two of their County Championship Division One match at Trent Bridge. Nottinghamshire declared on 451-8 before reducing the visitors to 23-2 at stumps, a lead of 428 runs in a match carrying implications for the championship race.

According to the ECB Reporters' Network account published by BBC Sport, Haynes and Patterson-White added 257 for the sixth wicket. Their partnership surpassed the previous Nottinghamshire sixth-wicket record in this fixture, the 201 made by Arthur Carr and Willis Walker against Leicestershire in 1925.

The recovery began from a difficult position. Nottinghamshire resumed on 42 without loss after only 63 balls were possible on the opening day, but slipped to 143-5 as Leicestershire's attack found regular breakthroughs. Josh Davey removed Haseeb Hameed, Joe Clarke and Kyle Verreynne on his way to figures of 3-88, while Ian Holland and Josh Hull also took wickets.

Haynes then changed the direction of the innings with Patterson-White. He reached his third century of the season from 118 balls, including 11 fours and a six, and later moved past his previous first-class best of 157. His 159 ended when he reached outside off stump and was caught by Davey at wide third man.

Patterson-White completed the third first-class hundred of his career and remained unbeaten when Nottinghamshire declared in the 98th over. Contributions from Fraser Sheat and Brett Hutton helped the defending champions secure a fifth batting bonus point before captain Haseeb Hameed called the innings closed. Leicestershire collected two bowling points.

Dillon Pennington then made the declaration count during the 13 overs available to Leicestershire. He had Rishi Patel caught at second slip and bowled Sheridon Gumbs, finishing the day with figures of 2-5. Nottinghamshire ended day two with maximum batting points and a commanding advantage, while Leicestershire faced the task of rebuilding their first innings when play resumes on Friday.
