Havertz, Saka and Odegaard Score as Arsenal Beat Coventry 3-0
Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 home win over newly promoted Coventry City, who were playing their first top-flight match in 25 years.

What happened: Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard scored as the champions took all three points from the opening match of the 2026-27 league season. Coventry were making their first top-flight appearance in 25 years.

Watch the highlights:

Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute after Christos Tzolis won possession deep in Coventry territory and Riccardo Calafiori supplied the low cross. Sky Sports reported that Saka doubled the advantage eight minutes later, reacting after goalkeeper Carl Rushworth diverted a Tzolis cross into the Arsenal forward's path.

Arsenal carried a 2-0 lead into halftime and added the third four minutes after the restart. Odegaard combined with Saka and Ben White on the right before his finish deceived Rushworth. The goalkeeper later denied Myles Lewis-Skelly and Havertz to prevent the margin from growing further.

Coventry's difficulty getting close to Arsenal was reflected in the first-half data. According to Sky Sports, citing Opta records dating to 2007, Coventry became the first Premier League team in that period to finish an opening half without a touch in the opposition penalty area or a completed tackle. Their first tackle arrived in the 69th minute, by which point Arsenal led by three.

Why it matters: The result gave Arsenal a clean start in their attempt to retain the league title, while Coventry's return began with the toughest possible assignment away to the reigning champions. BBC Sport described the night as a difficult introduction to the division for Frank Lampard's promoted side, but one match against Arsenal provides only an initial measure of the challenge ahead.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta recorded his 150th Premier League win in his 249th match in charge, Sky Sports reported. Arsenal next travel to Aston Villa before hosting Chelsea, while Coventry's next league fixture is at home to fellow promoted club Hull City. That match offers Coventry an immediate chance to respond after a demanding opening night in London.
