Havertz goal earns Arsenal 1-0 win at Liverpool
Arsenal defeated Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday, November 1, with Kai Havertz scoring the decisive goal in the 16th minute. This Is Anfield reported that Liverpool threatened an equaliser before half-time but found chances harder to create after the interval, as the visitors protected their early advantage through to the final whistle.
Watch the highlights:
According to Liverpool's official match report, the goal followed a loss of possession as the home side attempted to build from a goal-kick. Declan Rice advanced outside Noni Madueke on the right and delivered a low cross. Havertz was available at the far post to finish from close range and put Arsenal ahead.
Liverpool's selection included a first Premier League start for Trey Nyoni, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Victor Munoz returned to the bench. This Is Anfield reported that Cody Gakpo was starting a fourth successive match, with Bradley Barcola deployed on the left. Nyoni retained his place after Liverpool's midweek Carabao Cup game, giving the midfielder another opportunity in the starting side.
Liverpool came close to levelling before the break. The club's report described Florian Wirtz striking the crossbar with a free-kick from the left, followed by Alexis Mac Allister heading over from a Milos Kerkez cross. Arsenal also threatened, with Bruno Guimaraes shooting narrowly wide and Rice drawing a save from Alisson after a chance involving Jurrien Timber.
Szoboszlai and Rio Ngumoha came on as Liverpool sought a response in the second half. This Is Anfield reported that the hosts continued to struggle to break through Arsenal's defence, despite those changes. Iraola subsequently introduced Munoz, Kostas Tsimikas and Lewis Koumas, with Wirtz among the players withdrawn as Liverpool tried further adjustments in pursuit of an equaliser.
Alisson denied Christos Tzolis to keep Liverpool within one goal, according to the club's account. At the other end, Arsenal blocked a Ronald Araujo effort before Munoz headed a Tsimikas cross without generating enough power to beat David Raya. That was Liverpool's last chance to draw level, leaving Havertz's early finish as the difference between the teams.
