Havertz winner at Anfield sends Arsenal three points clear
Kai Havertz scored the only goal as Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday to move three points clear at the top of the Premier League. BBC Sport reported that the result ended Arsenal's wait for a league victory at the ground stretching back to 2012.
Watch the highlights:
The breakthrough came in the 16th minute, with Havertz converting Declan Rice's delivery at the far post. BBC Sport's player-by-player coverage identified Alisson's misplaced pass as the error that opened the way for the goal. Martin Odegaard regained possession to begin the move, which also involved Bruno Guimaraes and Noni Madueke before Rice supplied the decisive pass.
Liverpool created opportunities to respond before the interval. Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a free-kick, while Alexis Mac Allister failed to convert a headed chance from Milos Kerkez's cross. Bradley Barcola attacked from the left, but the hosts could not turn their pressure into an equaliser. David Raya also intervened after a Virgil van Dijk flick-on threatened to reach Alexander Isak.
Referee Andy Madley rejected two Liverpool penalty appeals during the first half. One followed Jurrien Timber pulling Isak's shirt inside the area; the other came when Cody Gakpo went down in a challenge involving Christos Tzolis. Neither incident resulted in a spot-kick, leaving Liverpool still needing to find a way through Arsenal's defence.
Mikel Arteta introduced Myles Lewis-Skelly for Guimaraes in the 62nd minute. Tzolis, making his first start since September following injury, later forced Alisson to save an effort directed towards the far corner. Piero Hincapie and Viktor Gyokeres replaced Tzolis and Havertz in the 84th minute, before Mikel Merino came on for Odegaard as Arsenal protected their advantage in the closing stages.
Liverpool finished with 17 attempts but none on target, according to BBC Sport's match report. Arsenal recorded their sixth clean sheet in nine league games and capitalised on Manchester City's defeat by Brighton. Liverpool remained fifth, nine points behind the leaders, while Arteta's side returned to winning ways after their midweek Carabao Cup exit against League Two Fleetwood Town.
