Harry Kane Plays Down Premier League Return as Bayern Talks Loom
Harry Kane has played down the prospect of returning to the Premier League to pursue Alan Shearer's all-time scoring record, saying his desire to move back to England has diminished since joining Bayern Munich. BBC Sport reported that the England captain is settled in Germany and expects discussions over a new Bayern contract to begin.
Watch the highlights:
Kane left Tottenham for Bayern in 2023 after scoring 213 Premier League goals. That total leaves him 47 short of Shearer's record of 260, but the striker indicated that the milestone no longer exerts the same pull. He did not rule out a future return, while making clear that his present focus remains on Bayern.
The 33-year-old has entered the final 12 months of the four-year contract he signed when Bayern paid Tottenham £86.4 million three years ago. According to the BBC, he is set to start talks with the German club over a new agreement. Kane spoke after receiving the Golden Shoe on Wednesday for finishing as the Bundesliga's leading scorer.
His comments followed a prolific campaign for club and country. BBC Sport reported that Kane scored 73 goals in total last season, including 61 in 51 appearances for Bayern. Vincent Kompany's side also completed a league and cup double, adding team success to the striker's individual production.
Kane credited Kompany, who took charge of Bayern in 2024, with helping him reach what he regards as the strongest version of his game. He pointed to Bayern's attacking and defensive structure, as well as the freedom to drop deeper or arrive later in the penalty area, as factors behind his output. Kane compared that flexibility with roles he previously occupied at Tottenham, particularly from Jose Mourinho's tenure onward.
Family considerations also feature prominently in Kane's current position. He said his family is settled in Munich and described his experience abroad as one that increased his appreciation of European football. Although he preserved uncertainty by declining to close the door completely on England, the immediate direction is toward Bayern and possible contract talks rather than a Premier League return.
