Harry Brook Backs Joe Root to Lead England Test Reset
Harry Brook has endorsed Joe Root's return as England Test captain and says his own focus is supporting the team after a demanding year on and off the field.

Harry Brook believes appointing Joe Root as England's Test captain was the correct decision as the team prepares to face Pakistan at Headingley. In an interview with BBC Sport, the 27-year-old said he was excited to work with Root and fully supported his return to the leadership role. Root was chosen following Ben Stokes' retirement, with Brook's workload as white-ball captain among the factors surrounding the decision.

Watch the highlights:

Brook said in June that succeeding Stokes would be an honour, but he does not know whether an incident in Wellington affected his prospects. During the winter, Brook was punched by a nightclub bouncer on the eve of a one-day international against New Zealand. He told the BBC the subsequent scrutiny was difficult, particularly while preparing to address the media after returning home.

The batter said the experience reinforced that England captaincy carries responsibilities away from the field as well as during matches. Amid the fallout, Brook led England to ODI and T20 series victories in Sri Lanka and then to the World Cup semi-finals. He said he was proud of his ability to continue performing and lead the white-ball team during that period.

Brook's international record underlines why he has been discussed as a future Test captain. According to the BBC, no male player has scored more international runs across formats since his Test debut in 2022. His Test average is 53.04, the highest among England players with at least 20 innings over the past 60 years, while his strike rate is nearly 87 runs per 100 balls.

He also acknowledged frustration with some of his shot selection during the Ashes, where he averaged just under 40. Brook identified a drive against Scott Boland in the first Test and an attempted six off Mitchell Starc in the second as costly errors. He said he has been working on assessing conditions earlier and identifying which strokes are easier or more difficult on a particular surface.

Brook remains England's white-ball captain and has withdrawn from the Indian Premier League, resulting in a ban from that competition. His franchise cricket is currently limited to The Hundred, while his emphasis remains on England. Brook said a Test leadership opportunity may come later, but his immediate priorities are winning matches, supporting Root and seeing what the new Test side can achieve.
