Harry Brook hits 202 as England post 429-4 against Sri Lanka
Harry Brook scored 202 against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Thursday to become the first England batter to make a double century in a one-day international, BBC Sport reported. The captain's innings carried England to 429-4 from their 50 overs in the tri-series match. Sri Lanka had yet to bat at the time of the report, so the record-breaking performance had not yet translated into a match result.
Watch the highlights:
Brook reached 200 from 114 deliveries, which the BBC reported was the fastest double century in ODI history. He surpassed the 117-ball mark set by India's Shubman Gill against West Indies last month. His final score also overtook England's previous individual record of 182, made by Ben Stokes against New Zealand at The Oval in 2023.
The acceleration came after a relatively quiet opening to Brook's innings. He scored 13 from his first 24 balls before reaching his half-century from 42 deliveries and his fourth ODI hundred from 75. The next hundred required only 39 balls. Across his 116-ball innings, the 27-year-old struck 21 fours and 10 sixes, helping England score 156 runs in the final 10 overs.
England's other batters provided substantial support. Openers Tom Banton and Ben Duckett made 50 and 29 respectively, before Brook shared a third-wicket partnership of 159 with Joe Root. Root was caught for 69, after which Will Jacks was promoted to number five. Jacks reached his half-century from 25 balls and finished unbeaten on 66 as England built a total the BBC identified as the highest in an ODI in Pakistan.
Brook passed Stokes' record by hitting a full toss from Dilshan Madushanka for six, then survived a dropped catch at mid-off on 185 in the same over. He began Janith Liyanage's final over on 186 and opened it with another six. A paddle-sweep boundary brought up his double hundred, before he was caught at third man from the innings' final delivery.
The innings followed England's defeat by Pakistan at the same venue in their tri-series opener on Tuesday. Brook had subsequently called for a more positive approach from his batters. His previous ODI best was 136 not out, also against Sri Lanka; this time he went beyond both that personal mark and England's national record.
