Harlequins beat Saracens 33-15 as Smith marks 200th appearance with first league win
Harlequins claimed their first Prem win of the season by beating Saracens 33-15 at The Stoop, with Marcus Smith scoring on his 200th appearance for the club. According to BBC Sport's match report, Quins secured a try bonus point before half-time and held off their London rivals to record a third successive home league victory against them.
Watch the highlights:
Smith opened the scoring inside three minutes, finding a gap after the ball was moved along the left and adding the conversion himself. Seb Driscoll scored the hosts' second try after 15 minutes, breaking through Tomos Williams following a powerful carry and pass by Fin Baxter. The England prop was making his first start in 10 months, contributing to an opening spell in which Saracens repeatedly conceded penalties.
Rotimi Segun responded for the visitors four minutes later after receiving a pass from Max Malins. Harlequins restored their momentum when a lineout maul was brought down near the line in the 24th minute, resulting in a penalty try and a yellow card for Ben Earl. Smith then prevented a potential Saracens score by knocking the ball from Malins' grasp before he could ground it.
Saracens' discipline caused further problems when Fergus Burke was sent to the sin-bin for a head-to-head tackle on Rodrigo Isgro. Within a minute, Cadan Murley collected a long pass and finished in the left corner for his ninth London derby try. Theo Dan answered from a maul on the final play of the half, but Harlequins still went into the interval with a 26-10 advantage and their bonus point secured.
Burke did not return after failing a head injury assessment, BBC Sport reported. Angus Hall replaced him, with Malins moving to fly-half. Saracens also changed five forwards early in the second half, but Will Porter extended the home side's lead in the 55th minute. He seized on a ball dropped by Segun, kicked ahead and reached the line, with Smith converting.
Nick Tompkins scored for Saracens in the 62nd minute, but Hall missed the conversion and the visitors could not find another try to earn a bonus point. Harlequins remain bottom, although they are now just one point behind Exeter and Newcastle. Saracens, who could have moved second with a win, sit fifth, five points behind leaders Gloucester.
