Hampshire Reverse Scott Kuggeleijn Decision After Staff and Supporter Feedback

Hampshire have reversed their decision to include New Zealand all-rounder Scott Kuggeleijn for the closing stretch of the County Championship season. BBC Sport reported that the county said Kuggeleijn would not represent the club after it reflected on feedback received from staff and supporters.

The change was announced less than an hour before play was due to begin against Warwickshire on Wednesday. Hampshire had named the 34-year-old in their squad for that match on Tuesday, but had not publicised his arrival on the club's social media channels. BBC Sport reported that Kuggeleijn was at the Utilita Bowl on the first day of the fixture.

Kuggeleijn was charged with rape in 2015. After an initial trial ended with a hung jury, he was acquitted following a retrial in 2017. Hampshire's statement did not provide further detail about the feedback it had received or identify specific concerns raised by staff and supporters.

The club thanked those who had shared their views and said its attention would now return to supporting the team through its remaining four County Championship fixtures. Hampshire also called for supporters to unite behind the side during what it described as a crucial phase of the campaign.

Kuggeleijn is a pace-bowling all-rounder who has played for Northern Districts in New Zealand for 12 years. His international record includes three Test appearances for New Zealand, along with two one-day internationals and 18 Twenty20 internationals. Hampshire's reversal means he will have no role in the county's final four red-ball matches.

The decision arrives with Hampshire under significant pressure in Division One. According to BBC Sport, the county are bottom of the table on 86 points, 16 behind Leicestershire. Hampshire have recorded two wins, five defeats and three draws in the Championship this season, leaving their final fixtures central to their effort to improve their position.
