Hammarby beat Rangers 3-0 to seal Europa Cup progress

Hammarby eliminated Rangers from the Women's Europa Cup with a 3-0 victory at Broadwood on Wednesday, completing a 5-0 aggregate win. BBC Sport reported that last season's finalists scored through Anna Walter, Ida Hermannsdottir and Fanny Peterson.

Walter opened the scoring after 13 minutes, finishing past Jenna Fife following Mathilde Janzen's pass. Laura Berry tested Cajsa Andersson in the 21st minute and again in the 58th, but both efforts went straight at the goalkeeper. Hammarby also missed opportunities before half-time through Hermannsdottir and Elin Sorum.

Hermannsdottir made it 2-0 on the hour after another through ball. Peterson then followed up when Fife stopped Svea Rehnberg's effort, adding a third for the visitors. The 16-year-old had also scored in the first leg in Sweden.

That earlier contribution had given Hammarby a two-goal advantage to defend in Scotland. According to SVT Sport's report of the September 23 meeting in Stockholm, Sorum put the home side ahead in the 29th minute after Hermannsdottir headed down a cross. Substitute Peterson extended the lead in the 87th minute with a powerful shot. Her late strike meant Rangers began the return needing to overturn a 2-0 deficit, rather than the single-goal margin that had stood for much of the opening match.

Rangers had entered the Europa Cup after losing to Ajax in the final of a Champions League qualifying mini-tournament on home soil, the Scottish club confirmed in its fixture announcement. Leanne Crichton's side had enjoyed stronger results domestically: the club's report of its September 20 match recorded a 3-1 win over Aberdeen that maintained a perfect start to the league season. Berry scored twice before half-time and Katie Wilkinson added a header in that game, but the European tie ended without a Rangers goal across either leg.

BBC Sport reported that Rangers' exit followed Hearts' defeat by Real Sociedad earlier on Wednesday. Together, those results ended Scotland's remaining involvement in the competition, while Hammarby advanced from the second qualifying round.
