Hammarby eliminate Rangers to reach Europa Cup last 16
Hammarby reached the last 16 of the Women's Europa Cup with a 3-0 victory over Rangers at Broadwood Stadium on September 30, completing a 5-0 aggregate win. Anna Walter, Ida Hermannsdottir and Fanny Peterson scored as the Swedish club won both legs without conceding, ending Rangers' involvement in the competition.
Watch the highlights:
The visitors arrived in Scotland with a two-goal advantage from the first meeting at Kanalplan. Walter extended that cushion early in the return, collecting a pass from Mathilde Janzen and beating goalkeeper Jenna Fife. SVT Sport reported that it was Walter's first goal for Hammarby, giving her a personal milestone on the night her team secured qualification.
Rangers struggled to turn their possession into dangerous opportunities. According to BBC Sport's match report, Laura Berry directed an effort at Cajsa Andersson after 21 minutes, but the hosts did not threaten again until Berry tested the same goalkeeper in the 58th minute. Hammarby also missed opportunities before half-time, with Hermannsdottir and Elin Sorum unable to finish close-range chances.
Hermannsdottir subsequently doubled the visitors' lead, running onto a through ball and finishing past Fife. The third goal came from 16-year-old Peterson, who reacted after the Rangers goalkeeper saved a close-range attempt by Svea Rehnberg. BBC Sport reported that the teenager's finish added to the goal she had already scored in the opening leg, giving her a contribution in each match.
Peterson's two goals came in contrasting fashion. In its report of the September 23 first leg, SVT Sport described her late strike from distance after she had come off the bench. Sorum had opened the scoring in that match, converting after Hermannsdottir headed down a cross. Those goals established the lead Hammarby carried into the return, before Peterson's rebound finish in Scotland helped complete the tie.
The elimination also ended Scottish participation in the competition, with BBC Sport reporting that Hearts had lost to Real Sociedad earlier in the evening. Rangers had entered the match as Scottish Women's Premier League leaders, while Hammarby were second in Sweden's top flight. Hammarby, last season's Europa Cup finalists, now advance to the last-16 draw, which Fotbollskanalen reported would take place on Friday.
