Lewis Hamilton Declares Ferrari Revival Complete with First Podium Finish While Max Verstappen Slams New F1 Rules as Mario Kart Racing
The 41-year-old British driver finished third in Shanghai behind Mercedes duo Kimi Antonelli and George Russell while claiming he is back to his best after nightmare 2025 season with Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton emphatically declared his return to peak form after securing his first podium finish for Ferrari with a thrilling third-place performance at the Chinese Grand Prix, while Max Verstappen delivered a scathing critique of Formula 1 new regulations following his retirement from the race.

The 41-year-old British veteran ended a 16-month podium drought dating back to Las Vegas in November 2024, beating Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in an epic wheel-to-wheel battle that showcased both drivers at their finest throughout the Shanghai afternoon.

I definitely feel like I am back to my best, both mentally and physically, Hamilton reflected after his breakthrough Ferrari performance. I still think there is room to improve. Training this winter has been the heaviest and the most intense that I have ever had, and that probably comes hand in hand with being older.

The podium represents a remarkable turnaround for Hamilton, who endured what he described as a nightmare debut season with Ferrari in 2025. Poor results and qualifying struggles left the seven-time world champion appearing disconsolate, but a major winter reset has restored both his confidence and the car competitive edge.

Mercedes delivered a stunning one-two finish with Kimi Antonelli claiming his maiden Formula 1 victory ahead of George Russell, but Hamilton stole the headlines with his Ferrari revival story that captivated fans in Shanghai and worldwide.

It is the hardest thing just to get a podium compared to a lot through my career, and it was the biggest challenge to get that and I just had to bide my time, Hamilton explained. Coming into the season I really cultivated that really positive mental attitude and I am taking that forward with me.

The moment proved particularly significant given Hamilton struggles to adapt to Ferrari last season, when the car failed to suit his driving style and produced a series of disappointing results that raised questions about his championship credentials at an advanced age.

I started this voyage and this dream of moving to Ferrari and being on the top step with them, and this podium has taken longer than I had hoped, Hamilton admitted. After a difficult year, to be able to be a part of developing with them, working with them over the past year, gives me huge pride.

However, the race was overshadowed by Max Verstappen blistering attack on Formula 1 new regulations after his retirement due to energy recovery system cooling issues. The four-time world champion delivered an unprecedented verbal assault on the sport direction.

It is terrible. If someone likes this, then you really do not know what racing is like, Verstappen declared with obvious frustration. Not fun at all. Playing Mario Kart. This is not racing and I would say the same if I were winning races, because I care about the racing product.

The Dutch driver continued his criticism by targeting both fans and officials, stating: I do not think it is what the real F1 fans like. Maybe some fans like it but they do not understand racing. Hopefully we can get rid of this as soon as possible.

In stark contrast, Hamilton praised the new formula that has created closer racing and more overtaking opportunities throughout the field. The British champion believes the regulations have delivered the finest racing in Formula 1 history.

I think it is the best racing I have ever experienced in Formula One, Hamilton countered. The cars are easier to follow, much better than past years. You can get very close, there is not a bad wake where you are losing too much downforce.

Hamilton described his battle with Leclerc in almost romantic terms, emphasizing the close-quarters combat that has become possible under the new technical framework. Hopefully it was an exciting race to watch because it was awesome in the car. It felt like go-karting, back and forth and you could really position your car in a nice way where there was a thin piece of paper between us sometimes.

The philosophical divide between Hamilton and Verstappen highlights broader tensions within Formula 1 as the sport balances traditional racing purity against entertainment value and competitive equality through innovative technical regulations.
