Hamilton can still take wins with big Ferrari step forward - Brundle
Martin Brundle has backed Lewis Hamilton to remain competitive for race wins in Formula 1, suggesting that Ferrari's upcoming car developments could see the seven-time world champion return to the podium regularly. The former McLaren driver and current broadcaster believes Hamilton's move to Ferrari was a calculated gamble that could still pay substantial dividends.
Speaking ahead of this weekend's race, Brundle explained: "Lewis is still at the top of his game. The issue hasn't been his driving ability but rather the package underneath him. If Ferrari can find another half-second through their development path, which I'm confident they will, then Lewis will be right there challenging for victories."
Ferrari has struggled with consistency this season, with both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc experiencing reliability issues and aerodynamic challenges. The Italian marque has promised significant upgrades for the upcoming European leg of the championship, which could transform their fortunes.
Hamilton himself has remained measured in his public comments, focusing on the incremental improvements rather than making bold predictions. "We're working hard every single day to understand the car better," Hamilton said. "The potential is there, we just need to unlock it. I have full faith in the team and the direction we're heading."
Brundle, who commentated on Hamilton's dominant era with Mercedes, pointed to the Briton's psychological strength as a key factor. "What separates Lewis from many drivers is his mental fortitude. He's been in this position before, fighting from the front and fighting from behind. He won't get frustrated or make silly mistakes. He'll keep pushing and the results will come."
The 2026 regulations have created an unusual dynamic, with several teams clustered together in performance. This unpredictability gives Hamilton and Ferrari a genuine opportunity to make ground on the leaders, provided the Scuderia can deliver on their development promises.
