Hain hits 142 as Warwickshire move within a draw of County Championship title

Sam Hain scored 142 as Warwickshire moved closer to a ninth County Championship title, building a commanding advantage over Leicestershire at Edgbaston on the second day. The visitors ended on 55-3 in their second innings, still 192 runs behind, after Warwickshire had made 372 in reply to 125. According to BBC Sport's report from the ECB Reporters' Network, a draw would now be sufficient for the Bears to secure the championship.

The foundations were laid by Hain and captain Ed Barnard, whose fifth-wicket partnership produced 165 runs across 50 overs. Warwickshire resumed at 130-4, with a lead of just five, and the pair added 51 without losing a wicket during a morning session shortened by bad light. Their progress turned a narrow overnight advantage into a position from which the home side could pursue an innings victory.

Barnard eventually fell for 88, edging a wide delivery from Ben Green as he attempted a drive. Warwickshire's lead had reached 126 by the time the stand ended. Chris Woakes followed soon afterwards, chipping his second ball to mid-on, but those setbacks did not prevent Hain from carrying the innings forward with support from the lower order.

Hain's innings occupied 301 deliveries and brought him his 21st first-class century. He also passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season for the second time. Kai Smith and Manny Suthar contributed before both were dismissed by Hull, while Ethan Bamber added further runs before being bowled by Patel. Hain and Olly Hannon-Dalby then put on another 35 for the final wicket, extending the first-innings cushion to 247.

Leicestershire's response featured an attacking start from Sol Budinger, who reached an unbeaten 43 from 36 balls. At the other end, Bamber removed Sheridon Gumbs and Rishi Patel within three deliveries. Those two wickets took the Warwickshire seamer's tally for the season to 66, leaving the visitors struggling to turn Budinger's scoring into a sustained recovery.

Following another interruption for bad light, Woakes trapped Steve Eskinazi lbw to leave Leicestershire three wickets down at the close. Warwickshire had not yet completed the job, but they finished the day with a substantial lead still intact and only a draw required to turn their strong position into a championship-winning result.
