Hackney scores first Everton goal in 3-1 cup win over Newcastle
Everton advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United on Thursday, setting up a trip to Fleetwood Town. James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with Dan Burn replying late for the visitors, according to Everton's match report.
Watch the highlights:
The breakthrough came in the 34th minute after Tyrique George pressured Amar Dedic into losing possession. Hackney supplied Garner, whose curling shot found the corner from outside the penalty area. Hackney then scored his first Everton goal before half-time, meeting Barry's cross with a first-time finish to establish a two-goal lead.
Newcastle introduced Yoane Wissa, Joelinton and Anthony Elanga at the interval, but Everton held their advantage. With 21 minutes remaining, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall advanced down the left and found Barry, who controlled the ball before finishing. Burn's late header reduced the margin without changing which side would progress to the next round.
For Hackney, the result also provided an opportunity to strengthen his claim for a regular starting place following his summer move from Middlesbrough. In a separate interview published by Everton, the midfielder said he had continued working while spending time on the bench and hoped he had made the most of his opportunity against Newcastle.
Hackney said the victory carried particular importance after Everton had lost their previous two matches. He credited the supporters for their contribution and explained that arriving in the penalty area at the right moment was something he practised. His goal and assist gave him a direct role in both of Everton's first-half goals.
The EFL's account noted that Barry's strike was his fourth in this season's Carabao Cup. Newcastle, winners of the 2024-25 competition, are now out, while Everton move into the last eight with a lower-division opponent awaiting them. Fleetwood eliminated Arsenal earlier in the week to secure their place in the draw.
Hackney cautioned that Fleetwood would not be straightforward opponents, pointing to their win over Arsenal. Before that cup meeting, Everton return to league action against Newcastle on Monday, this time away from home, the club confirmed.
