Haaland winner gives Manchester City 3-2 victory at RB Leipzig
Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal after the German side twice recovered from behind. The result at the Red Bull Arena gave Enzo Maresca's team a third victory in four league-phase matches, following earlier wins against Porto and AEK Athens.
Watch the highlights:
City went ahead through a Castello Lukeba own goal in the 37th minute and held that advantage at half-time. Leipzig's first response came shortly after the interval, when Ridle Baku scored in the 49th minute. Enzo Fernández then restored the visitors' lead in the 58th minute, only for Antonio Nusa to make it 2-2 three minutes later.
Haaland supplied the third City goal in the closing stages, ending a sequence in which Leipzig had answered each of the visitors' previous breakthroughs. The Guardian reported that Elliot Anderson provided the cross for Haaland's sliding finish. Leipzig could not produce a third equaliser, leaving City with all three points after a second half containing four goals.
City's official team announcement confirmed that Maresca had made four changes and named Haaland captain for the match. Marc Guéhi, Nico O'Reilly, Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden entered the starting side, while Rúben Dias, Joško Gvardiol, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Jérémy Doku moved to the bench. Anderson and Fernández started together in midfield behind the attacking players.
The victory also ended Leipzig's perfect home record this season. According to City's pre-match information, the hosts had won all five previous games at the Red Bull Arena without conceding. That run included a 1-0 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven, alongside four Bundesliga victories. City became the first visiting team this season to score there.
For City, the result added to a 2-0 away victory at Porto and a 5-1 home win against AEK Athens. Their other European fixture had ended in a 4-2 home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain. Those results, combined with Wednesday's win in Germany, leave Maresca's side with nine points from their opening four matches.
