Haaland winner earns Manchester City 3-2 victory at RB Leipzig
Erling Haaland scored the deciding goal as Manchester City beat RB Leipzig 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday, recovering after the hosts twice cancelled out their lead. According to the Guardian's match report, Elliot Anderson supplied the cross for Haaland to slide home and secure victory for Enzo Maresca's side after recent Premier League defeats by Aston Villa and Brighton.
Watch the highlights:
Maresca made four changes from the team beaten by Brighton, selecting Abdukodir Khusanov at centre-back instead of Rúben Dias and handing Haaland the captain's armband. Leipzig threatened through Antonio Nusa and Christoph Baumgartner before City went ahead. Rayan Cherki found Nico O'Reilly with a diagonal pass, and the defender's first-time cross was turned into his own net by Castello Lukeba.
City had opportunities to extend that advantage before the interval, with Haaland and O'Reilly both failing to convert headers. Leipzig then drew level in the second half after Anderson lost possession near halfway. Brajan Gruda played in Ridle Baku on the right, and his shot from a tight angle went between Gianluigi Donnarumma and the goalkeeper's left post.
The hosts continued to threaten, with Ezechiel Banzuzi shooting into the side-netting and Donnarumma recovering after spilling another Baku effort. City nevertheless regained the lead when Iliman Ndiaye delivered a cross from the left for Enzo Fernández to head in. Their advantage again proved short-lived: Nusa found space on the left, with Matheus Nunes out of position, and finished to bring Leipzig level for a second time.
Anderson missed a close-range opportunity before providing the delivery that Haaland converted for the winner. Cherki also struck a post late in the match. Haaland said afterwards that his contribution to the team's victory mattered more than how many touches he had managed, having spent much of the contest waiting for service from City's attack.
Maresca acknowledged that both Leipzig goals had been avoidable and said Donnarumma knew he had made an error on the first equaliser. The manager did not describe the goalkeeper's situation as a concern, saying his immediate focus remained on the forthcoming Nottingham Forest match. City secured the away win, but Maresca's post-match assessment recognised the defensive mistakes that had twice allowed Leipzig back into the contest.
