Haaland gives 10-man Manchester City derby victory at Old Trafford

Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 13, with Erling Haaland scoring in the 60th minute after Phil Foden had been sent off. City's official match report confirmed a fourth consecutive Premier League victory at the start of Enzo Maresca's reign.

Foden received a straight red card following an incident with Bruno Fernandes in the first half. AS reported that the City forward reacted from the ground during the confrontation. The visitors nevertheless found the winning goal through Haaland, whose finish was initially disallowed before a video review allowed it to stand.

According to City's account, Haaland converted a deflected cross from Josko Gvardiol on the hour. The offside check lasted almost three minutes before the goal was awarded. United had already struck the woodwork through Marcus Rashford's free-kick before half-time and Kobbie Mainoo's effort shortly after the interval, but neither attempt put the hosts ahead.

City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a late save from Bryan Mbeumo to preserve the lead. At the other end, Senne Lammens had denied Enzo Fernandez with a fingertip stop after Haaland's goal. City held on despite spending most of the contest a player short, turning the Norwegian striker's finish into the match's decisive moment.

The victory came on a day of several derby firsts for City. The club's team announcement confirmed that Elliot Anderson, Fernandez and Marc Guehi were making their first appearances in the fixture, while Maresca was taking charge of his first Manchester derby. Anderson replaced Ayyoub Bouaddi in the only starting-lineup change from City's Champions League match at Porto on Tuesday.

United had entered the game with four points from three league matches and had won this home fixture 2-0 last season, according to City's pre-match statistics. Sunday's defeat left them on four points, while City advanced to 12. The visitors' perfect start has now reached four league games for the seventh time, surpassing Chelsea's six such starts.
