Haaland Goal Seals Man City Win as Fernandez and Ndiaye Debut

Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a 1-0 home victory over Coventry, as deadline-day signings Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye made their debuts. BBC Sport reported that Erling Haaland scored the only goal, taking his league tally to three in three games, while City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a series of saves to preserve the result.

Fernandez, signed from Chelsea for £125 million, had initially been named among the substitutes. He was promoted to the starting lineup shortly before kick-off after Nico O'Reilly sustained a knock during the warm-up. Ndiaye, a £60 million arrival, also started despite having completed only two training sessions with his new teammates.

City's winning move offered an early glimpse of Fernandez's role in Enzo Maresca's midfield. The Argentina international released Antoine Semenyo with a precise pass, and Semenyo delivered the deep cross from which Haaland converted. Fernandez operated as a number eight and was encouraged to advance into attacking positions.

The midfielder registered six touches in Coventry's penalty area, with only Haaland recording more for City. Two Fernandez efforts were blocked before he was replaced in the 76th minute by Ayyoub Bouaddi, another summer signing. Maresca, who previously coached Fernandez at Chelsea, said his familiarity with the player should help him adapt quickly.

Ndiaye became the first Senegalese player to represent Manchester City. His pace and willingness to carry the ball were evident, with no player attempting more than his eight dribbles. Maresca nevertheless acknowledged that the forward still has to learn City's positional demands, explaining that he sometimes dropped too deep when the team wanted him higher in the final third.

Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, remained a threat and forced City to protect a narrow advantage rather than cruise to victory. Elliot Anderson was named player of the match after completing 143 of 155 passes—four more successful passes than the entire Coventry side. The win kept City's 100 percent league record intact while offering Maresca an initial competitive look at two costly additions to his rebuilt squad.
