Erling Haaland’s 300th goal in club football gave Manchester City a 1-0 Premier League victory over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium, preserving the hosts’ perfect start under Enzo Maresca. The result leaves Manchester City with nine points from three league matches under Maresca, but the performance was less secure than the perfect record suggests. Fernández’s contribution to the goal and his involvement in City’s best first-half combinations were immediate positives. Haaland’s landmark supplied the decisive finish on a day when Rushworth and Coventry’s organization limited the home side to one goal.

For Coventry, the defeat was a third in three Premier League games since returning to the top flight. The visitors have yet to score in the league, extending a wait for a top-flight goal that dates to Mustapha Hadji’s strike on 5 May 2001. Even so, their second-half pressure and the quality of chances created at the Etihad offered encouragement. Turning those openings into goals is now the urgent task.

City’s next performances will show whether Fernández can sustain this early influence and help Maresca’s side control matches more consistently. Coventry must build on the chances created against Donnarumma while ending both their scoreless start and their run of defeats.
